Free software is a question of freedom not price. Free software refers to the freedom of all users to execute, copy, distribute, study, change and improve software. More precisely, it refers to four freedoms for software users:
Freedom to use the programme, for whatever purpose.
Freedom to study how the programme works, and to adapt it to the users requirements.
Freedom to distribute copies.
Freedom to improve the programme and make public the improvements, so that the whole community may benefit.
Obviously the source code must be available for two of the freedoms. "If it is not source, it is not software".
Free software tends to be more reliable than proprietary software.
Copyleft is a way of protecting these civil liberties for everyone without reserved rights. Thanks to the Copyleft licence we have the right to use, modify and redistribute the programme code, or any programme derived from the same, only if the distribution terms remain unchanged. That is, anyone who redistributes the software, with or without changes, must concede the freedom to copy it and modify it more. Copyleft guarantees the civil liberties that each user has.
Yes, as they are many types of licences: free software, open source software, public domain software, software protected with copyleft, software not protected with copyleft, software covered by GPL, the GNU system, GNU software, free software, proprietary software, freeware, shareware, commercial software.
